Chichén Itzá
We awoke early to get front of line to visit one of the world’s seven wonders. It paid off, soon after getting our tickets we joined a couple visiting from Barcelona with our tour guide ahead of the impending crowds. They explained their own Mayan family history and the remarkable details associated with the main pyramid and the various surrounding structures, which had been subject to limited restoration.
Geometrically the pyramid represents the Mayan calendar in several ways, including 91 steps a side, with 1 extra step into the temple making 365. Only recently it was discovered to be built upon a cenote, a point of connection with the Mayan underworld.
